GPT-4: Is the future finally here?

GPT-4: Is the future finally here?

What is GPT-4?

GPT-4, the successor of GPT-3, is more dynamic and interactive than anything previously. As GPT-4 states on its website, GPT-4 is capable of writing screenplays to accept visual input to handle longer text.GPT-4 is a neural network-based language model that will be trained on huge amounts of text data to produce high-quality natural language writing. GPT-2 and GPT-3 have already achieved considerable advances in enhancing the quality of language creation, and they have a wide range of applications in areas such as entertainment, healthcare, and finance.

The key differences between these three are as follows:

  • ChatGPT is a human-interactive AI chatbot program that leverages GPT-3 and GPT-4 language models.
  • GPT-3 was first published in 2020 and was trained on 175 billion parameters, making it the biggest neural network ever created.
  • GPT-4 is a more complicated language model than the previously listed, but the potential it has to change how humans communicate and interact with technology is beyond exhilarating and yet compromisingly frightening.

Sam Altman, OpenAI's chief executive, stated on Twitter that GPT-4 was the "most capable and aligned" model yet, albeit "it is still flawed".

The capabilities

GPT-4, when tested against GPT-3, has been shown to outperform the latter in numerous tests such as the bar exam, GRE, LSAT, SAT, and AP tests. As their website states, “The difference comes out when the complexity of the task reaches a sufficient threshold—GPT-4 is more reliable, creative, and able to handle much more nuanced instructions than GPT-3.5.” The testing was through a series of benchmarks, including recreating tests originally meant for people, to understand the differences between the two models. Neither of the two programs got any special preparation for these tests. As a result, the findings lean towards GPT-4.

The research uses other possible variables into account when testing aptitude.GPT-4 was also tested using typical machine learning benchmarks.GPT-4 beats existing big language models as well as the majority of state-of-the-art (SOTA) models, which may incorporate benchmark-specific programming or extra training methods.

The team also looked into other languages as well. Several existing machine learning benchmarks are written in English. “To get an initial sense of capability in other languages, we translated the MMLU benchmark—a suite of 14,000 multiple-choice problems spanning 57 subjects—into a variety of languages using Azure Translate,” they wrote. Out of 24 of the 26 languages that have been evaluated, GPT-4 surpasses GPT-3.5 and other programs in many languages.

OpenAI has released a pdf of their research and findings. Here is the link for their technical report.

Future collaborations

Many services are now incorporating AI or ChatGPT in general (as we saw with Google’s BARD and Bing’s AI). Here are some announced or work-in-progress collaborations which will use GPT-4 in their services:

  • DuoLingo: Duolingo provides 40 languages and 100+ courses with a simple user interface and fun-but-competitive leaderboards. With a few taps and swipes on their phone, students go from elementary vocabulary drills to complex sentence constructions. With a new subscription tier dubbed Duolingo Max, Duolingo turned to OpenAI's GPT-4 to improve the product with two new features: Role Pla and Explain my Answer, which sets out the rules when you make a mistake.
  • Be My Eyes: Be My Eyes has been developing technology for the community of over 250 million individuals who are blind or have limited vision since 2012. The Danish firm matches people who are blind or have limited vision with volunteers to assist them with hundreds of daily chores such as recognizing a product or navigating an airport. Be My Eyes began creating a GPT-4 powered Virtual VolunteerTM within the Be My Eyes app that can create the same degree of context and comprehension as a human volunteer using the new visual input capabilities of GPT-4.
  • Stripe: Stripe facilitates payments for both small and big enterprises throughout the internet. While Stripe is developing their infrastructure to cover all facets of the payment process, its core users are developers—those who work with and integrate Stripe's technologies. Stripe has previously used GPT-3 to assist their support crew in better-serving users by doing activities such as forwarding issue tickets and summarizing a user's inquiry. Stripe now utilizes GPT-4 to scan these sites and provide a summary that outperforms those authored by humans.
  • Morgan Stanley: Morgan Stanley is transforming how its wealth management staff discover important information with the use of OpenAI's GPT-4. The model will power an internal chatbot that does a thorough search for wealth management content.
  • Khan Academy: Khan Academy is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a free, world-class education to anybody, everywhere. Khan Academy has announced that GPT-4 would be used to power Khanmigo, an AI-powered assistant that serves as a virtual tutor for students as well as a classroom assistant for teachers.
  • Government of Iceland: Icelandic is very important to Icelanders. Instead of taking so-called "loanwords" from other languages, Iceland's government maintains a Language Planning Department that coined Icelandic terminology for new concepts. As a result of these attempts, the language has remained remarkably "clean" and true to its Old Norse roots. Iceland has teamed with OpenAI to employ GPT-4 in the preservation effort of the Icelandic language—and to transform a defensive stance into a chance to innovate—on the initiative of the country's President, HE Guni Th. Jóhannesson, and with the aid of the private sector. This one truly is game-changing in the play of languages as many languages are on the route to going extinct in a few years. With GPT-4 and possibly more programs in the future, language preservation is easier than ever.

Future impacts

GPT-4's capacity to create human-like text has the potential to have a substantial impact on education and training. It may enable the development of more complex and individualized instructional content that responds to the requirements and skills of the student. Furthermore, it may promote the creation of intelligent tutoring systems capable of providing real-time feedback and help to learners, therefore improving the learning experience.

These processing skills may have important consequences for the healthcare industry as well. It may aid in the development of more advanced and accurate medical diagnosis systems capable of analyzing patient symptoms and medical information in order to give more individualized and effective therapies. Similarly, it may help medical research by allowing for a more efficient examination of enormous amounts of medical data and literature.

However, there are social and ethical concerns as well. The ability of GPT-4 to create human-like prose may have important societal ramifications. It may, for example, be used to spread fake news or propaganda on a huge scale, which could have serious consequences for democracy and social stability. Furthermore, it may increase the problem of defamation or deep fake videos, in which AI-generated films are exploited to disseminate disinformation or malign individuals

A number of ethical problems will also arise, including the possible abuse of AI-generated content and a lack of transparency in AI decision-making. Furthermore, there may be fears that GPT-4 may be used to generate unethical or biased material, or that it will be used to disseminate hate speech or other negative themes.

In conclusion, GPT-4 has the potential to have a huge influence on many parts of our life, including artificial intelligence developments, industrial disruption, education and training, healthcare and medicine, societal ramifications, and ethical considerations. Since the exact form and scope of these consequences are unknown, it is critical to ensure that GPT-4 development and deployment are done in an ethical, transparent, to reduce possible hazards and enhance societal benefits. However, this also falls in the hands of the user to make choices that are impaired to align with safety in all aspects.
